A lot of younger viewers are going to see this as racially offensive. I nearly reported it myself for use of blackface, but there's no specific category this fits into in the reporting form and - on further thought - I think it's important that art from the past (that was in its day seen as 'harmless' - by the empowered majority) should be experienced by the young, so they can see just how much enlightenment has already been achieved since.
I'm sure it's meant to be confusing weird and different but I can't quite fathom WHY the song is about an unidentified monster approaching, unless the guy and his girl are perhaps in a godzilla movie?
I think the monster is the narrator of the song, after he has dolled himself up, groomed and basically gone under the knife then he's a monster. It's about the least surreal thing Vivian ever did, talk about himself :P
@@aburninglandfillofbadmovie2930 Nah, he is saying it was easy to find love from Japanese prostitutes for $1, but elsewhere he has to work at tidying himself.
I'm Just waiting for the snowflake wokey kokeys to come on and start having a tantrum meltdown because a white man is doing "blackface" 🙄😒🙂😆🤣 Loved the Bonzo's .
Oh my god I’m so glad I grew up when I did and had the pleasure of the bonzo’s in my life. Such talent and such good fun. This couldn’t exist today. They would be cancelled to death for blocking up like this. Yes I know it’s wrong but at the time it was innocent and it was a laugh. Shoot me…. I don’t care. These guys poked fun at everything male/female/black /white/ (can blue men sing the whites!) . Genius stuff and I distinctly remember do not adjust your set on tv as a kid. It was a doorway into another world of crazy fun
'problematic' black face / minstrel -- but intent is not hostile due to the words fitting mockery of modern man. And I hate the word problematic. Great camp. Look for Craig Ferguson's version with same audio. It only exploits women and a small leather bound man, not race. Great song.
I fucking adore the Bonzos, and have a quote from Viv tattooed on my right arm (in his son Rupert’s handwriting). I know they aren’t assholes, and I know what they were doing here, but holy shit it just doesn’t not translate to today. It’s the one song on Gorilla that I go past. But nothing or no-one one is perfect, and it’s wrong to apply what we know now to something 55 years old, given that 55 years prior to this, was 1912……. And I hope this video isn’t removed. I’m also a huge fan of Gil Scott Heron, and his poetry, but there is a track on his first album Small Talk at 125th and Lenox that is painful too. Anyway. Love these guys, if Viv hadn’t died so needlessly I think the 90s and 00s would’ve given him a huge renaissance…..
AS A KID I LOVED DO NOT ADJUST YOU SET, AND THE BONZO`S SO PISSED OFF WHEN THIS SHOW WAS DROPPED FOR THE ADULT TO ENJOY MONTY PYTHON I HATED THAT MOVE AS I WAS NOT ALLOWED TO WATCH THE LATER SHOW AND THE BONZO `S WERE LOST
Silly Billy And The Pepperpots, with Billy here performing as Viv Stanshall and the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, the monster coming is Billy Shepherd/ Shears.
Viv and the rest were geniuses comedy back then was to British taste, pity about the rot setting in, we can't even laugh at old comedy anymore thanks to an evergowin minority. 😮
This song speaks of plastic surgery, changing how your nose looks, buying a Merseybeat wig...got popular learned to play the guitar...Billy Shepherd telling us his Plans about becoming...Paul McCartney??? Hmmm...
Loved the Bonzos, always did. But here's the 1000th post you'll be deleting from your comments section. White guys blacking up may have been hilarious 50 years ago, but it isn't now. Please get that embedded into your giant poisoned electric head. Thanks.
Ah the fuck wits of middle england speak, not offensive?. It's a great song but thank fuck we've left middle class white men wearing black makeup at best naive at worst downright racism.
Just too funny. Black face, gay/fey, East Indians. Who's going to be first to say -- "You'd never get away with that today". But I do wish someone would try!!!
What makes blacking up unacceptable now is a greater awareness of the horrors perpetrated on other cultures by white europeans during the times of slavery, colonialism and empire. Taking the piss out of people who we raped, murdered, robbed and enslaved is ignorant in the extreme.
is that ***** face?
Incredibly good. I love it when Vivian laughs 😁
look out cancellation for blackface is coming!...how you lasted this long is AMAZING

@@jamesrowden303 I can see that. The references to japan is what made me think godzilla.

Billy Sheers
Without the Bonzo's there'd be nothing to quote over in the pub with yer mates, knew a few songs inside out from Granny's Greenhouse.

Tigers head ,Catford on Frday night
It appears to be blackface in b&w, but in reality the colour was more of a Lincoln green - quite fetching really.
I’m surprised we’re allowed to view this nowadays, clearly it’s highly offensive (to those people who love to be offended!)
Oh, fuck, think I've broken a rib. Haven't seen this in 57 years
IS that David Jason introducing the band?
Yep. With Terry Jones as the singer.
You wouldn't get away with this now. Oh, how time's have changed.

Wtf

Hi Billy!
Correct, and no ofense was meant, billy needed the blackface to hide surgery scars
I dont know why im offended but I dont think that I really even am. This must be the most posh garbage this side of the pond. Quite
U had to see them live , weird goings on with dummies garden hoses with trumpet mouth pieces whirled round until it clouted someone
I think they just feel they were born in the wrong bodies.😅 They are clearly sending themselves up as the inept limbo and trumpet act indicates.
If you understand then you know
It's Billy, aka Paul McCartney
Is that Del Boy introducing them?
Yep.
Not interested in white opinions on this matter. How are black folk affected? That is all that matters.

EXACTLY!
I am suspired this hasn't been shut down by BLM!
Genius. Wonder why Neil didn't "black up"

If you look carefully, you'll notice that the guy playing the congas is none other than a young Justin Trudeau
Billy
Yes, and he needed to hide the surgery scars, no offense was meant
This would actually kill folk if it was shown on telly now! hospitals would be full of mortally offended casualties! mostly white!

Billy was only hiding his recent surgery scars. No offense was meant by this.
Oh god! Just no! That's not on.
Best Pop Combo EVER!
One is Utterly, Utterly Outraged? No white face impression of a Hooked nosed c*** lipped, Jug Eared, Dog Haired, green teethed hunchbacked JEW?

😱HuH !!! .......Re Re Re Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
OK, what am I missing? Aren't these guys dressed up in "blackface", which is a very hateful, racist mockery of African Americans? Please advise.,..
Yes and its fantastic and its what they deserve
Interesting you specify “African Americans”…
What makes blacking up unacceptable now is a greater awareness of the horrors perpetrated on other cultures by white europeans during the times of slavery, colonialism and empire. Taking the piss out of people who we raped, murdered, robbed and enslaved is ignorant in the extreme.
I don't think so. It's more to do with political-correctness and a fear of being pilloried.
Nonsense. Shears needed it to hide recent plastic surgery scars
Nonsense, black face used here so Billy can hide surgery scars, not racism
viv and the bonzos are fantastic hear..but also spot a very young david jason!
I loved the Black & White Minstrel Show. Good, clean family fun.
Oooch
No offense was meant. VIV was just hiding the recent surgery scars.@@margin606
Billy needed that to hide recent surgery scars, no offense was meant@@margin606
Love the irony, Sidney .
Crazy song. Not sure the make up is quite right!
It's to do with PID and the replacement
